POP SONGS - Big Hooks, Bigger Truths, and a Whole Lot of Heart

The Kitchen Dance Party at 10:42 PM

Pop is where my Gemini heart gets to be all of herself at once — playful, whimsical, a little bit mouthy, and completely honest.

If country is the front porch truth and alternative is the midnight kitchen, pop is what happens when you turn the kitchen lights up, put on your favorite playlist, and finally sing the things you’ve been holding in — with a big hook that won’t let go.

These six songs are my pop family, and they all come from very real places:

CEMENT BOOTS - The Sassy Justice Anthem
This is my playful, dark-humor, don't-mess-with-me pop. You called it Happy and Playful for a reason — it's that wink-wink, male-vocal, toe-tapping delivery of a very serious boundary. It's for anyone who's dealt with a derelict, a knuckle-dragging brute who thought he was untouchable. The hook is pure theater: a tailor-made pair of cement boots for those who tear apart other people's lives. It's my way of saying, "You don't get to keep harming normal folks and walk away clean." It's justice with a beat, and a burial at sea with the fishes who swim free. Fun to sing, fierce underneath.

CRAZY GENE - The Family Badge of Honor
This one is 100% fast, keyboard-driven, cheeky pop at 120-168 BPM. It's my confessional comedy anthem. Momma had a crazy gene and passed it on to me — that switch that flips, that mouth that regrets what it said. Sometimes that gene is a relief, when you need to fight a fight or defend a belief. Sometimes you wear it like a badge of pride when you should tuck it inside. I love the ending you wrote — should I use it for good and be a good girl, or should I use it to take over the world? And then passing it on to my girls. Every family has this gene. This song just finally gave it a name and a chorus.

My pop songs live in that sweet spot you labeled so perfectly: Pop, Happy, Playful, Whimsical, Female Vocals — but with a little extra spice underneath. They make you dance, and then they make you think, “Wait… she just said exactly what I’ve been feeling.”

GUILT AND GARLIC BREAD - The Italian Family Truth Bomb
This is my favorite kind of pop — whimsical on the surface, generations deep underneath. Raised on guilt and garlic bread, doing whatever mama said. You nailed that Italian family tradition where guilt is used as a proven tool, mind and body fully fed to the brim. It's funny, it's tender, and every single person raised in that tradition hears themselves in it. The question you ask at the end is so important: When will someone be able to break the past and bring us to current times at last? Maybe there is a better way. It's playful female vocal pop that carries 100 years of family kitchen tables in one chorus.

HUGS ACROSS THE MILES - The Tender Heart of Pop
This is the soft center of the whole pop collection. You slow it right down and ask the sweetest questions: Do hugs across the miles reach the heavens high? Do they travel over oceans, in inclement weather, when the sight-line is so poor? Do they whisper in your loved ones' ears? This is my long-distance love letter — for kids away at school, for family spread across the country, for anyone who has ever wished a hug could fly like an eagle. Peaceful hearts, minds set to ease. A hug that gives the giver peace of mind, too. Pure, heartfelt pop that heals.

TREASURE OF THE TIMES - The Nostalgia Anthem
Fast, playful, female vocals — and a whole time machine. Bobby socks and poodle skirts, soda fountain malts with two straws, unlocked doors and picnics, drive-in picture shows with buttered popcorn under an Indian Summer moon, Hires root beer floats that nearly reached the sky. Your lyric says it perfectly: "I never knew about the good old days until I grew old and they became good, when by gone times became a treasure of the times." This is pop as memory-keeping. For everyone who says "What happened to the good old days?" — this song answers: they live on inside your mind.

HIPPIE ROOTS - The Wild & Free Reclamation
And then you added the perfect closer! Adventurous, ukulele, bare feet, skirts and tight tube tops, flowers in the hair and a soul that rocks. This is your do-no-harm, take-the-time-to-care-and-nurture anthem. "I belong running wild and free, I yearn to be a hippie." No neatly packaged box for you. It's the pop song that says: I'm going back to what was always inside me, because once you're a hippie it stays inside till you bring it back out and wear it with pride. It's a magic pantomime that lives within your soul and makes you whole.

Together, these six pop songs are me at my most Gemini — one minute handing out cement boots, the next minute sending hugs across the miles, laughing about garlic bread, and dancing barefoot back to my hippie roots.

Pop, Playful, Whimsical, Adventurous, Female Vocals — and all true.
